One of the most common methods of breeding roses is budding. This is an inoculation with an eye (formed by a kidney) of a cultivated rose on a dog rose. Choosing a rose hip in the form of a stock accelerates the growth of rose shoots and increases the overall frost resistance of a plant. This operation is not as complicated as it seems, but the result will be visible only the next year, when the kidney starts to grow.

You will need

  • Healthy young rosehip seedlings
  • Grafting cuttings with well-formed kidneys
  • Knife
  • Film or tape for strapping
  • Garden var

Instruction manual

  1. Have a budding at the end of summer (July-August). Choose a healthy annual rosehip seedling. The most unpretentious and frost-resistant stock is considered a dog rose (Rosa canina). A week before vaccination, water the plant well.
  2. Choose strong shoots of cultivated rose for scion. The bark of such shoots is easily separated from the wood, and the buds are well formed. Cut the cuttings and remove all the leaves on them, leaving only the petioles. If you need to save the cuttings before vaccination, put them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
  3. Prepare vaccination tools. The knife blade should be clean and sharp. Cut the ribbon for tying. The length of the tapes should be about 30 cm and a width of no more than 1.5 cm. Put all tools on a tray or clean paper next to the grafted plant.
  4. Rake the ground off the rosehip root. Vaccination should be done in the root neck (thickened central root) or on an annual shoot as close to the root as possible. Wipe the root with a napkin or a clean cloth. Use a special knife to make a T-shaped incision.
  5. On the prepared graft for grafting, separate the shield - make a shallow cut, separating the kidney with the petiole. The kidney should be in the middle. If a strip of wood has been cut along with the kidney, then it can not be removed.
  6. On the dogrose, expand the edges of the incision made with the tip of the bud knife. Carefully holding the petiole, insert the prepared kidney into the incision. Press the kidney firmly to the wood and tie the grafting site tightly with electrical tape, leaving only the eye open.
  7. Grafted rosehip spud with moistened earth. Check the survival rate after a couple of weeks. If the kidney is green, then the operation was successful.
  8. Next spring (end of April), unleash a rose hip, remove the binding and cover the grafting site with a garden var. Cut the rosehip shoots 1.5 cm above the grafted eye.
note

Keep your knife and slices clean. Land falling on compatible parts of the scion and stock can lead to decay of tissues.
