If you decide to dig out the garlic three days later than the due date, the cloves will begin to crumble, because of this the heads will become less dense and unsuitable for long-term storage. Therefore, it is so important to monitor the ripening of garlic and not miss the moment of its instillation.
Experienced summer residents can purely intuitively determine the ripening and harvesting of garlic from the beds. For those who are faced with the cultivation of this crop for the first time, it is recommended to periodically (once a week, starting from the first days of July) dig out a head of garlic in different parts of the ridges, carefully inspecting it. In a mature culture, the outside of the head should be juicy (but not dry) and firmly holding the tooth, rising high to the stem.
It should be noted that garlic in no case should be pulled out, it should be scooped up with a shovel or pitchfork. Experts advise to remove garlicexclusively in warm weather, but if there is severe drought, water the bed a few hours before digging. It is much easier to free the roots of garlic from a slightly moist soil. If the roots come off together with the soil, there will be free access for infection.
Remove the harvested crop under a canopy, thereby protecting it from direct sunlight, do not allow them to get wet. A week after drying the garlic, begin to trim the stems, leave hemp up to six centimeters long over the heads. Remove the damaged heads; for storage, select only the strongest ones.
