You will need:
  • Scissors for trimming stems;
  • shovel;
  • candle or gas burner;
  • trellised shelves (options: wooden boxes with a lid, bags with dried nettles);
  • thermometer;
  • glass jars, sunflower oil and honey (optional).

Instruction manual:
  1. It is important to properly remove garlic in the fall to prevent it from rotting during storage. Start harvesting in dry weather, and after digging the bulbs, dry them properly. Be sure to carefully sort the garlic. For long-term storage, only the most selected heads should be left, but vegetables with slight damage and moldy should be set aside separately and eat first.
  2. Cut the stalks of garlic with scissors after drying the crop. Now you need to set fire to the roots with a paraffin candle or a gas burner - this is a very important point, which allows many experienced gardeners to keep the garlic bulbs full for a long time, to prevent their premature drying and spoilage.
  3. Arrange garlic for long-term storage on wire shelves - this is the most often recommended option that gives excellent results. The layer of vegetables on them should not be made too thick, about 15 centimeters is enough. In addition, it is permissible to lay the heads in a small wooden box (also not in a thick layer), but it is necessary so that there is free space above them and a tightly closed lid. Many housewives store garlic and bunches, as well as small braided plaits in limbo. If you have harvested a very large crop, then fill in linen (not polyethylene!) Bags of pre-dried nettles, store the bulbs in them.
  4. Be sure to observe the optimal temperature for storing garlic so as not to freeze and, on the contrary, not to dry the heads. It is believed that this vegetable is best preserved at temperatures from –5 to +8 degrees. Its strong differences in the room should not be! Normal conditions for storing garlic are in dry cellars and on glazed loggias on the north side.

Useful advice:

Some craftsmen do not preserve fresh heads of garlic, but divide the vegetable into cloves, which they then peel. After that, garlic can be pickled with other vegetables. This will preserve their best preservation, but the garlic itself will lose its taste. The best way to preserve all the properties of peeled cloves is to fill them with honey (a more expensive option) or sunflower oil. In this form, the vegetable can be stored in the refrigerator for a long time in a hermetically sealed glass jar. Honey from it can be used for the treatment and prevention of colds, and oil with the aroma of garlic - for dressing various salads.
